LOWER HEIDELBERG, Pa. (WPVI) -- A prison inmate is back in custody after escaping from a transport vehicle in Berks County Tuesday afternoon.

It happened around 12:30 at the intersection of Rebers Bridge and Brownsille roads, right by the Blue Marsh Lake in Lower Heidelberg.

The prisoner, identified as 37-year-old James Ciaramitaro of Easton, and two others were inside the van being transported from a preliminary hearing.

The van had stopped at an intersection when the shackled Ciaramitaro allegedly kicked out the glass in the back of the van, jumped out and ran.

One of the two constables in the van ran after him, but she didn't catch him.

Multiple municipal police departments, state police, a state police helicopter and K-9 units assisted in the search for the prisoner.

Then at around 1:45 the suspect was found hiding up a tree about two miles away from where he escaped, and taken into custody.

Ciaramitaro is being tried for allegedly stealing jewelry from a home in Alsace Township. But now he'll face added charges for his attempted escape.

No one was injured in the incident.
