Eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins honored for commitment to social justice

CENTER CITY (WPVI) -- Eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins isn't just winning on the field, but off the field as well.

The NFL's 'Man of the Year' award nominee picked up another accolade at Maison 208 in Center City Tuesday. Jenkins was recognized by City Council and local leaders for using his platform to spotlight social justice.

"This is awesome," said Jenkins. "As I started to get out and use my platform for change, I started to see the impact that I was having just with my own voice."

To his critics, kneeling during the National Anthem as a way to spotlight racial inequality is controversial. But to his supporters, Jenkins is a consummate champion for social reform.

"A million dollars, the NFL put up for social justice issues is a step in the right direction," said Councilman Curtis Jones. "That would not have happened if not for Malcolm Jenkins."

Jenkins has even done ride alongs with the Philadelphia Police to bridge the gap between those who wear the badge and the communities they serve. Efforts that landed him a nomination from his team for the 'Man of the Year' award.
