Pa. mom, leg amputee, is thankful to walk again

ROYERSFORD, Pennsylvania (WPVI) -- Stephanie Dunn, who became a leg amputee three years ago, is willing to walk a mile to inspire others in her shoes.

In October of 2022, she contracted necrotizing fasciitis, a rare flesh-eating disease, with seemingly no explanation.

That resulted in the loss of her left leg.

Dunn, a mom of two boys who was working as a speech therapist, had her whole life turned upside-down. She had just moved to the Schwenksville area one month prior to the infection.

Yet, she knew that she would be able to build herself back through rehab and the use of prosthetics.

She leaned on the Spring Valley YMCA as a place where she could find adaptive exercise equipment and a community of people ready to support her.

And today, she decided to give back by participating in the Greater Philadelphia YMCA's Gobble Wobble 5K. The annual Thanksgiving tradition took place across four different locations, including Pope John Paul II High School in Royersford.

Dunn's dream is to obtain a prosthetic running blade, something often costly and hard-to-obtain for amputees like herself.

She hopes to be approved for a grant and acquire it in time to return to the Gobble Wobble 5K next year - this time as a runner.
