Firearms stolen after vehicle drives into gun store in New Castle County

NEW CASTLE COUNTY, Delaware (WPVI) -- Authorities are investigating after a gun shop in New Castle County was broken into early Monday.

It happened just before 2 a.m. at Miller's Gun Center on West Jackson Avenue in Wilmington Manor, Delaware.

Officers were initially called to the scene for an alarm going off, but say as they were en route, a passerby called 911 reporting that they had witnessed a flatbed truck backing into the front door.

When police arrived at the scene, they discovered the store had been broken into and several firearms were stolen.

The truck was not in the area when investigators got to the scene.

A new door surrounded by plywood could be seen outside the shop Monday afternoon.

It's unclear exactly how many firearms were stolen during the break-in, according to police.

Action News spoke with a man who lives nearby and says he may have heard the brazen robbery taking place.

"Last night we heard a bang," recalled Dallas Shahan from Wilmington Manor. "Not very sure what it was, we kinda went back to bed thinking maybe it was a transformer or something."

A residential neighborhood sits directly behind the gun store. Neighbors say many have been customers at the shop and are upset over what happened.

"I've shopped there before. It's not fair, that's the guys living right there, ya know. That's his money coming in, it shouldn't happen," said Will Gonzalez from Wilmington Manor.

The owner declined to be interviewed but told Action News with security cameras and barricades out front, the business felt well protected.

The owner is now hoping that law enforcement finds the thieves and recovers the firearms.

Residents say the missing guns are among their biggest concerns.

"Hopefully they don't end up in the wrong hands," said Shahan. "If they're in the streets now, yes, that's definitely a scary situation."

New Castle County police and ATF are investigating the burglary. Anyone with information is urged to contact the police.
