PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A man died after he was shot while stealing a vehicle in Philadelphia's Frankford neighborhood, according to police.

It happened around 3:08 p.m. Friday at Frankford Avenue and Pratt Street.

Police say a 29-year-old man left his Honda running while using the ATM. That's when the 48-year-old suspect jumped into the car and drove off.

The car owner fired one gunshot and hit the suspect in the head.

Police say the wounded man crashed the vehicle into another car at Pratt Street outside the Frankford Transportation Center.

Jacques Sylvain says he feared for his life as he watched the Honda come barreling towards his cab.

"I see the car coming like zig-zag, coming straight to me," he recalled.

Nearby surveillance video showed the harrowing moments as officers got the man into the back of a cruiser and rushed him to the hospital, where he later died.

Brianna Colter works nearby and witnessed the chaos.

"I thought the man was having a seizure or something. I didn't know it was deeper than that," she recalled.

No other injuries were reported.

Police are questioning the car owner who had a permit to carry.

Anyone who may have witnessed the shooting is asked to call police at 215-686-TIPS.
