PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A fatal fire in Kensington claimed one man's life and left another man injured.

The fire broke out around 12:15 a.m. on Monday on the 2000 block of East Sergeant Street.

When firefighters arrived, they were met with heavy smoke billowing from the third story of a row home.

Firefighters rescued two people from inside the home.

A man in his 50's was discovered on the third floor. He suffered burns and smoke inhalation and was pronounced dead at the hospital.

A 57-year-old man, who suffered smoke inhalation, was listed in stable condition.

Neighbors looked outside and saw first responders packing the narrow street.

"We saw the whole block full of first responders and fire trucks, police officers, ladders quickly went up on the home. They started smashing windows to get the smoke out," according to Matt Kuziemski of Kensington.

Kuziemski added, "I think it's a tragedy and that it's really sad. Again, they've been here for quite a long time and out of anybody being in the neighborhood, they were always trying to be very helpful and welcoming."

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
