PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Temple University men's basketball has hired Aaron McKie as an assistant coach.

Sources confirmed the hiring to Action News prior to the school's announcement Thursday afternoon.

McKie, 41, is a former guard for both the Owls and Philadelphia 76ers.

"I am truly excited for the opportunity to come back and coach at my alma mater," McKie said in a statement released by Temple University.

The Simon Gratz High School grad played 8 seasons with the 76ers from 1997 to 2005, including on the 2001 Eastern Conference Championship team.

McKie was an assistant coach for the 76ers from 2008 to 2013.

Fran Dunphy, head coach of Temple Men's Basketball since 2006, calls McKie a "tremendous representative of Temple University."

"Aaron McKie is not only Temple Basketball, but he is Philadelphia Basketball," Dunphy said in a statement.
