WILMINGTON, Del. (WPVI) -- There is a growing controversy over laws in Delaware's Charter Schools.
The American Civil Liberties Union and Community Legal Aid Society filed a complaint Wednesday saying the laws violate the rights of minority students and those with disabilities.
The complaint is against the state's department of education, but more specifically the Red Clay School District in northern Delaware.
Kathleen MacRae, Executive Director of the Delaware ACLU, says, "We would like to see a moratorium on charter schools. We'd like to see an 'opt out' system instead of an 'opt in' system that we use now - we think that would be fair. We'd also like to see more equitable funding, weighted funding for schools that have poor, low income, and and special needs students."
The ACLU's complaint will be reviewed and investigated.
In the meantime, a spokesperson with the Red Clay School District says it is now and always has been committed to diversity and inclusion in their schools.
