Cake closer to being state's official desert

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - March 18, 2008

The Smith Island cake is a step closer to being named the state's official desert.

The many-layered cake from the Eastern Shore got a 44-1 vote in the state Senate yesterday.

The one opponent jokes he voted against the cake because his county grows apples and he prefers apple pie.

The Smith Island cake bill now heads to the House.

If approved, the cake would join blue crabs, Baltimore Orioles and terrapin turtles on the list of official Maryland symbols.
