Delaware prisons to remain under US supervision

WILMINGTON, Del. - December 25, 2009

Federal officials say the state has come into full or partial compliance with all but three of the 217 provisions in the original, three-year agreement that put the prison system under federal supervision.

Baylor Womens Correctional Institution is exempt from the extended agreement, as is the medical care portion at Sussex Correctional Institution. Mental health care at the Georgetown prison remains under review.

Delaware entered into the agreement with the Justice Department following a series of reports in The News Journal about prison health care and high inmate death rates.
