Investigators say an officer fired several shots during the confrontation, but they are not sure the man was wounded by those bullets or by someone else's gun.
It all started about 11:00 on Thursday night on the 1900 block of Sigel Street.
A number of officers were involved in the altercation with the man.
There's no word on how it started.
The wounded man was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he is in critical condition.
