Consumer advocate Herb Denenberg dies at 80

WAYNE, Pa. (AP) - March 19, 2010

That's according to a statement from Pennsylvania Insurance Commissioner Joel Ario, who called Denenberg "a true consumer advocate."

Denenberg died Thursday at his home in the Philadelphia suburb of Wayne, Pa. The cause was not released.

Denenberg served as state insurance commissioner from 1971 to 1974, helping to revolutionize the auto-insurance industry by championing the "no-fault" concept.

He was later appointed to the Public Utilities Commission, but left state government in 1975.

He then spent more than two decades as a television commentator and consumer reporter.

He is survived by his wife, Naomi, two brothers and a sister. Funeral services will be private.
