Taking the sting out of beekeeping

COLUMBIA, Md. (AP) - February 9, 2011

The Howard County Council has voted unanimously to take some of the legal sting out of the honey of a hobby.

The new regs allow hives within 25 feet of an adjoining property, 10 feet if there's a six-foot fence or hedge.

Hives currently must be 200 feet from nearby homes.

Amateur beekeeping is growing in popularity.

The county executive is expected to sign the measure into law.
