NJ town tells residents: Shovel or else

TOMS RIVER, N.J. (AP) - February 26, 2014

Toms River's township council passed an ordinance Tuesday night that sets fines for people who don't clear off their sidewalks. It's aimed at making sidewalks safe for schoolchildren.

The penalties are $100 for the first offense and $200 for each subsequent offense. The total fines can't exceed $1,000, but each day a sidewalk isn't cleared counts as a separate offense.

The fines can't be imposed until one day after a notice of violation is issued.

The Asbury Park Press reports the measure passed unanimously.
