Memorial service for '60 Minutes' correspondent Bob Simon

NEW YORK CITY (WPVI) -- '60 Minutes' correspondent Bob Simon will be remembered Tuesday at a memorial service in Manhattan.

Around 150 people were expected to attend the private memorial at the Metropolitan Opera House.

A much larger public service is planned for the coming months, but details have not yet been released.

Simon died in a car crash last Wednesday on the West Side Highway, at the age of 73.

Sunday night on "60 Minutes," CBS aired the final piece he ever did for the show, one he finished the day he died. It was produced by Simon's daughter, Tanya, a veteran "60 Minutes" producer.

The story featured a possible new treatment for the Ebola virus. This Sunday, 60 Minutes will devote its entire show to Simon's career.

Following the report, fellow correspondent Steve Kroft spoke of Simon's "sense of justice and his sense of the absurd," both of which informed his journalism.

Kroft said Simon was "both a model and an inspiration" to his colleagues at CBS News during 47 years at the network.
