Driver identified after car crashes into homes, cars in Camden
CAMDEN, N.J. (WPVI) -- Family members have identified a driver critically injured after a crash early Tuesday that damaged homes and parked cars in Camden, New Jersey.
Marvin Drumgoole remains hospitalized at Cooper University Hospital after the 2 a.m. at the intersection of Newton and Haddon avenues.
Witnesses said Drumgoole's Chrysler 300 was traveling north at a high rate of speed when it went out of control.
The car snapped a utility pole in half, smashed into multiple parked cars and destroyed part of a porch which is attached to some apartments.
Drumgoole was ejected from the vehicle. Medics rushed him to Cooper in critical condition.
The impact of the crash brought down wires, and littered debris from inside and outside the car on the roadway.
Car parts and the battery were some of the debris. The battery broke out, and sprayed on other vehicles.
Drumgoole's family told Action News the car belonged to his mother, and he was supposed to return it to her.
"He was trying to get home," said Drumgoole's brother, Mel Drum. "He had my mother's car, and she had to be at work soon."
The Action Cam spotted sheet music from his mother's choir lying on the road. Now they are praying for Drumgoole's recovery.
"The family is praying for him," said Drum. "It's just heavy on my heart."
As the clean-up got underway, Action News spoke to a resident who lives in one of the houses.
"I looked back, I see the car, and like it explodes all over," said the resident. "I come back and it looked like this. This is Camden you know. This is like the second time it happened."
That person had to move out of his home because officers said it was unsafe to be on the porch after the crash.
Eventually a tow truck arrived to remove the vehicle.
Haddon Avenue remained closed near the crash site for hours as road crews finished cleaning up the debris and police investigated.
