DARBY, Pa. (WPVI) -- A two-alarm house fire in Darby, Delaware County, left four firefighters injured.
The fire broke out around 5:20 p.m. Wednesday on the 100 block of Whitely Terrace.
Arriving crews reported fire and heavy smoke coming from the two-story home.
"We just were met with a high-heat, high-smoke and fire conditions and we had to make a hasty retreat to regroup," said Chief Bill Childs with the Darby Fire Department.
Officials said the fire started in the basement and quickly spread.
"When the fireman went over and broke through the roof, the smoke was just coming out and you could see the flames and all," said witness Karen Yates.
Shelton Revelle, who lives next door, tells Action News smoke woke him up from his nap. Revelle said the smoke was so bad he had to feel his way to safety.
"I thought my house was on fire so I was running all around. When I got down the steps, I couldn't see the kitchen or the dining room," said Revelle.
The fire was placed under control around 6:20 p.m.
Revelle was able to make it out, along with his neighbors in the burning home.
The injured firefighters suffered nonlife-threatening injuries.
Officials said the fire caused moderate damage to the home, and heavy smoke damage to two others leaving Revelle and some other families displaced. It is unclear when they will be able to return to their homes.
