WEST PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Police say one person is dead and another is injured after an apartment fire in West Philadelphia.
The fire started before 8 a.m. Saturday along the 4700 block of Hazel Avenue.
Firefighters say they arrived to heavy flames showing from the first floor of an apartment building.
Philadelphia Fire Commissioner Derrick Sawyer says a man, who was trying to put out the flames, died in the blaze.
A fire extinguisher was found in the kitchen sink, officials say.
Sawyer says, "An alarm went off, allowing eight people to get out."
One of those people were taken to Jefferson University Hospital for unknown injuries.
So far, no word on their condition.
The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
