Police say the worker fell through the flooring of Pier 78 along the 2000 block of Christopher Columbus Boulevard.

SOUTH PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Police say a man has died after he was pulled from the Delaware River in South Philadelphia.

The victim was identified Friday as 50-year-old John Johnson of Wilmington, Delaware.

A marine unit found Johnson around 9:30 p.m. Thursday, police said. He was unresponsive when pulled from the water.

Police say the victim fell through the flooring of Pier 78 along the 2000 block of Christopher Columbus Boulevard.

Police said Johnson is believed to have fallen through Pier 78, along the 200 block of Christopher Columbus Boulevard, while he was doing construction work on the pier.

His hard hat and car was found parked nearby, police said. They also called his cell phone, but got no response.

Johnson was rushed to Hahnemann University Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 10:33 p.m.

Autopsy results are pending, police said.
