School for 6th graders opens in Downingtown

DOWNINGTOWN, Pa. (WPVI) -- In Chester County, a brand new school opened its doors to students and staff Monday.

Off the bus and into a brand new school. It was the first day of class at Marsh Creek 6th Grade Center in Downingtown where all 6th graders from the district's 8 municipalities will be educated.

Planners looked at different models before settling on the all 6th grade format. This new campus will alleviate crowding in the middle schools, but administrators add it also provides a warm place for students in what is typically a difficult transition year.

From the quiet of the library and media center to the gymnasium to the cafeteria, the building was finished this summer. But planning began years ago with a lot of community involvement.

They wanted a 21st century school which includes a 1-to-1 iPad initiative for the nearly 1,100 students.

There's also a strong environmental focus in the curriculum. The grounds will eventually include an outdoor classroom and nature trail.

The timeline for the trail and centers depends on fundraising. But if they can raise enough money the hope is to start putting in the trail this spring.
