Feed the Children provides resources for those in need

NORTH PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- The Feed the Children caravan came rolling into town on Friday and hundreds of designated families flocked to a North Philadelphia church to receive much needed resources.

It really was a sight to see, with so many families getting a helping hand.

Fresh fruits, nutritious foods and clothing items were donated and prepared especially for those in need.

It was all about giving back and putting smiles on faces.

It's part of the Feed the Children initiative. Hundreds of underserved families stood in line to take part, including West Oak Lane resident Warren Young and his daughters.

Young says, "It's very valuable and important for the people who are unemployed. People who just need the extra food and can't afford to pay for the extra personal care and needs."

The parking lot of Deliverance Evangelistic Church in North Philadelphia was turned into a super grocery store.

More than a dozen agencies pulled together to sponsor the massive giveaway, including Philadelphia Eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins and his foundation. He saw Feed the Children in action in New Orleans and wanted to help bring it to Philadelphia.

Jenkins tells us, "I got to see the impact first hand. And to I know that it doesn't take too many resources - something we can do rather quickly, and just with the help of a few partners to really know it out. And I think it came together really fast and a lot of people jumped on board to help us."

Jenkins' fraternity, Omega Psi Phi, also helped lend a hand at the community event.

Andrew Ray of Omega Psi Phi says, "One of the main missions of Omega Psi Phi is service to the community. And to be a part of this gathering where we are providing services on multiple levels, that's one thing we know our community needs."

And you're never too young to volunteer. Just ask Kyla Herrera, who tells Action News, "I'm here to help people have food when they don't have money to eat."

Each family received enough food to feed four members for a week, plus a box of household goods. And for that Barbara Giles is grateful.

"It touches my heart. It's just beautiful, that's all. I love it," she said.

Hunger is a serious problem that hurts children every day. In fact, in the United States 1 in 5 families struggles to put food on their table each day. So, Feed the Children is working to try and address that problem.
