102-year-old woman victim of NJ home invasion robbery

TOMS RIVER, N.J. (WPVI) -- A 102-year-old woman is speaking out after being a victim of a home invasion and robbery in Toms River, New Jersey.

"I was frightened. I was annoyed more than anything," Evelyn Drucker said.

Evelyn and her 72-year-old daughter, Bonnie, say it all began around 8 p.m. Monday when the front doorbell rang at their Dock Street home.

"He had already opened the storm door, and then he grabbed me and he turned me around and held me from the back," Bonnie Drucker said. "He put his arms in the front, and he started pushing me and I yelled to her to call the cops."

Evelyn Drucker wears a Life Alert pendant around her neck so she can quickly call authorities.

"The suspect heard that and immediately went to her, pushed her to the ground and ripped the pendant from around her neck before she could push it and activate it for emergency help," Toms River Police Spokesman Ralph Stocco said.

Bonnie Drucker tells Action News, knocking over her 102-year-old mother made her mad.

"When I fell down and she yelled at him for my falling down, he came and picked me up very gently," Evelyn Drucker said.

The intruder demanded cash. Once the mother and daughter handed him a small amount he left, leaving Evelyn's Life Alert pendant on the front doorknob.

Thankfully, they were not hurt.

"At any point in time something like this can turn on a dime if you resist so the best thing that they did was cooperate," Stocco said.

The thief ran away down Dock Street and it all happened so quickly the Druckers were able to give only a basic description: a man in his 30s, about 5 feet 8 inches, wearing a black knit cap, jeans and a waist-length coat.

Police do not believe the motive for the robbery, but believe drugs are a likely possibility.

They want to remind everyone no matter what your age, don't open a door to a stranger.
