White House officials say President Obama made a phone call to the parents of an American couple killed during last week's terror attacks in Brussels.

The president offered his condolences Sunday afternoon, and praised Justin and Stephanie Shults, referring to them as the epitome of all that was good about America.

The brother of Justin Shults, 30, a Tennessee native, confirmed his death Saturday via Twitter. The death of Stephanie Shults, a Kentucky native, was also confirmed Saturday by her employer, Mars, Incorporated, via Facebook.

The husband and wife had not been seen since the attacks happened.

On Sunday, Stephanie's Aunt talked about her niece's kind heart.

"I think if there were more people like Stephanie and Justin, then there wouldn't be this evil in the world. I mean she was the peacemaker. If there was a problem with friends, or with family, she was always the one just making peace.

"You don't know why these things happen, but I know that Stephanie had a very strong belief in God and Stephanie is in heaven," said Betty Newsom, Stephanie Shults' aunt.

The filter company Justin Shults worked for, Clarcor, issued a statement on his death:

"We grieve with his family and continue to offer our support as they mourn this unimaginable loss. Justin has been an integral member of our global finance team since May of 2012 and he has lived with his wife, Stephanie, in Brussels since 2014. He will be remembered by his CLARCOR community as an intelligent, kind and loyal friend and employee. Justin will be greatly missed by those who knew him. We do not have news yet about Justin's wife, Stephanie, and ask that you keep her and her family in your prayers."

Justin Shults' brother, Levi Sutton, said the last thing Shults told him was that he loved him.

Justin Shults was originally from Tennessee and his wife, Stephanie, was from Kentucky.

They graduated together from Vanderbilt University's Owen Graduate School of Management.

A family member says they were dropping off Stephanie's mother at the airport, and were watching her walk through security when the bombs went off.
