You might notice the arrival of some new kiosks at a few Rite Aid stores in Center City Philadelphia.
We first told you about the KeyMe service last month.
You download the app to your smartphone, scan in your keys, and if you ever lose them you can go to one of these kiosks and have new replicas cut on the spot.
You could also choose to have a copy mailed right to your home.
While this seems very convenient, some security experts have concerns about the potential for theft and fraud.
They suggest instead to use a patented high security locking system that cannot be replicated by apps like this one.
In response KeyMe says it has safeguards in place and its technology will not increase the risk of theft.
Michael Harbolt from KeyMe explains, "People need to treat their keys the same way they do their bank ATMs or their credit cards. So we strongly recommend only sharing keys with people you trust. Understand anyone with access to your keys can make a copy at a future point."
The KeyMe kiosks are located at the Rite Aid stores on the 2300 block of Walnut Street and the 1600 block of Chestnut Street.
