Fire crews monitor and investigate scene of southeast Houston fire after massive blaze, HFD says

HOUSTON, Texas -- A massive fire in southeast Houston first reported on Monday afternoon, is still sending smoke billowing for miles across the city on Tuesday morning.

The thick plume of smoke could be seen on Houston TranStar cameras, just south of the Ship Channel.

SkyEye13 continued to fly over the scene, where tires were among the flames, along with industrial piping.

Officials have not yet said the exact cause of the fire.

100 firefighters working to extinguish tire fire, no injuries reported, HFD says

Houston Fire Department officials provided an update as the massive tire fire continued to blaze in southeast Houston on Monday afternoon.

According to HFD, the fire call came in at about 2:50 p.m. at a recycling facility that has debris in the back. At about 3:55 p.m., the situation escalated to a 2-11 incident, requiring extra resources and assistance.

HFD said that crews are monitoring the air quality in the area and are prepared to respond if the need arises.

According to fire officials, 100 firefighters are at the scene as they work to extinguish the blaze.

HFD said there are no reported injuries at this time, but added, however, that the heat is a concern for the firefighters at the scene. Officials said they have medics and cooling equipment at the scene for firefighters who are facing the extreme heat.

HFD officials said they do not know at this time what sparked the fire.

Authorities said there is no evacuation at this time, emphasizing that they do not see a risk as of now for the surrounding neighborhoods.
