Families outraged over Delco cemetery left in disrepair

SHARON HILL, Pa. (WPVI) -- A woman going to visit her grandmother's grave in Sharon Hill, Delaware County was appalled to find the cemetery in a state of disrepair.

Jalancia Thompson feels that Mt. Lawn Cemetery is disrespecting the dead - the weeds and grass are knee high.

Her grandmother Blossie Blunt was buried here several decades ago.

Thompson's family couldn't afford a gravestone so they come once a month to put flowers down.

Month after month it seemingly gets more difficult of find her burial plot.

"Its Mother's Day and they didn't do anything. You walk up here and fall in holes, people are out here with their own lawn mowers - everyone's complaining but nothing is getting done," said Thompson.

And just a few steps from Blunt's burial plot is piles of trash and nearby are even some old mattresses.

It's a disturbing sight for those coming to pay respect to their deceased loved ones.

Len Bauman lives along the cemetery.

He mowed many of the gravesites along his back fence - many of them WWII veterans. He felt it was the right thing to do.

"I'm sorry - everybody deserves better than this no matter where you are buried in this world," said Bauman.

Thompson says cemetery officials haven't been very helpful.

"Nothing - they don't have the money, can't afford to hire anyone right now, the landscapers they wanna hire don't have insurance so they can't afford to hire them. It's just the runaround all the time," said Thompson.

Action News reached out to Mt. Lawn Cemetery officials numerous times but they have not responded to our attempts for comment.
