PEMBERTON TWP., N.J. (WPVI) -- Police are investigating the attempted abduction of a teenager in the Browns Mills section of Pemberton Twp., New Jersey.

It happened along New York Road in the Presidential Lakes area on Tuesday night.

Police say a 14-year-old girl was walking down the street when a man driving a brown Ford Ranger pickup truck approached her.

"The male was wearing some sort of mask and demanded that she get into the vehicle," said Lt. Jason Waters.

Investigators say the girl screamed and ran away.

Waters said the teen did the right thing, and said anyone in a similar situation should do the same.

"Do not get into any vehicles that may pull up to you. Definitely, if there is an incident, the best thing to do is just what this little girl did last night is run, get away," he said. "If there are people you trust in the area, go to them."

Understandably, the young victim was running for her life and wasn't able to get a license plate number.

Police are hoping that someone saw something and will provide a helpful tip to get the person responsible off the street.

The community is alarmed by the news.

"Everybody out here knows everybody, so they could not be from this area. There is no way they can be from this area. For one, just driving around I would see the car and if I see a brown Ford Ranger, I am calling the cops," said Ryan Clark.

"People are definitely on watch right now, especially for that truck," said Vincent Pasquarella. "I feel bad for whoever finds that truck first, because it will probably be something pretty serious."

Anyone with information is asked to contact police.
