Razor blade found in candy in Montgomery County

TOWAMENCIN TWP., Pa. (WPVI) -- Police say a razor blade was found inside a wrapped piece of Halloween candy in Towamencin Township, Montgomery County.

Jennifer Gage says her 13-year-old son Brandon found a two inch razor blade in a piece of his Halloween candy.

"Like I opened it up and a razor blade fell out of it. I was scared and said 'Why would someone do this?" said Brandon.

The mother says the razor was in the wrapper of a miniature Nestle Crunch Bar after a night of trick-or-treating around Woodlawn Drive and Walnut Lane.

"I think it's crazy to go and ruin an innocent holiday - kids go and dress up and get Halloween candy and you have to worry about razor blades," said Gage.

Police hit the streets handing out warnings and the school district made reverse 911 calls.

"This changes everything. I mean that neighborhood is never going to think of Halloween the same. The child got the candy from a neighbor and that's what startling to everyone," said Sgt. John Cutrone, Towamencin Township Police.

"The first thing we said is, 'This is such a great neighborhood, why would they find a razor blade in the candy?' It was unusual for sure," said Jeremy Riggaill.

Some parents decided to throw out their candy, others like the Riggalls are just thoroughly checking it.

"We are taking extra precaution telling them not to open up their candy but to bring it to me first and I will be the one to open it," said Mary Riggall.

On Walnut Lane, residents say Halloween night was a festive one with haunted houses and families having a good time.

Some believe teenage pranksters are responsible. Gage says at this point she doesn't know if it was a malicious act or the manufacturer, but she's making changes next year.

"Well I will have someone go around with him. He went around by himself because everyone had gone out. I'll keep a better inventory of whose door he goes to knock on," she said.

Meanwhile the investigation continues.

Residents are strongly encouraged to check all items for foreign objects and report anything suspicious to police immediately.
