Woman shot in the head in North Philadelphia

NORTH PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Police say a 26-year-old woman was shot in the head in North Philadelphia.

The incident happened late Friday night on the 2400 block of North 7th Street.

Two witnesses were walking near the Hartranft Elementary school whey they noticed the woman.

They say she was lying on the ground in the rear alley way of the school.

The victim was bleeding and a small handgun was near her head, witnesses say.

The witnesses told police, they ran from the scene and called them.

When they returned to the scene, they say, an unknown male was with the victim and the gun was missing.

The male is believed to be someone from the neighborhood.

Medics rushed the woman to Temple University Hospital where she underwent surgery.

She is listed in critical condition.

Police have not determined a motive or made any arrests for the shooting.
