NORTHPORT -- An unusually strict bathroom policy at a Long Island high school is coming under fire by parents.

Northport High Schools are now requiring students to sign in and out each time they use the bathroom, which are monitored by teachers.

The bathrooms are only open during class. The school principal says the new rules are intended to keep students safe.

At a school board meeting on Monday night, parents say they should have been notified, and that students were not informed fully.

School officials did not say exactly what the safety concerns were. They say that bathrooms will be open throughout the school day, but students will still have to sign in.
