PECO crews return from assisting in Florida following Hurricane Irma

EDDYSTONE, Pa. (WPVI) -- PECO workers returned home Sunday afternoon after a long and tiring trip helping restore power to hurricane victims in Florida. While they said they are glad to be home, they were also grateful for the chance to help.

Utility trucks pulled up to PECO's Baldwin Service Building in Eddystone and suitcases were unloaded after spending more than a week in 'less than ideal' accommodations.

But they said it was one of the most gratifying trips they've taken, coming to the aid of those recovering from Hurricane Irma.

"The toughest thing to see was the kids and the people who were without power at that point for up to 10 days," said PECO Manager of Transmission Larry Lemaitre. "And with the high heat and high humidity, they were suffering."

In all, more than 350 PECO employees and contractors traveled to Florida to help with power restoration efforts after the powerful storm left millions in the dark. This particular crew did most of its work in the Fort Myers area.

"The vegetation was almost jungle like that the crews had to deal with," said Lemaitre. "Putting back wires, poles, trying to restore power for the population."

Crew members said they were most impressed with the resilience of the residents they helped.

"They never complained about how long it was taking," said Lemaitre. "In fact, with what little they had they offered to share it with us. Water, fruit, whatever they had they were willing to give to the crews."
