Shelter Me: Home At Last Dog Rescue

NORTH WALES, Pa. (WPVI) -- In this week's Shelter Me report, we take a look at one of the bigger rescues in the area and how it's grown over the years.

Home At Last Dog Rescue in North Wales saved more than 1500 dogs in 2015.

"We have a mission of saving dogs," Home At Last President Jaime Crane told 6abc, "and there's a lot of animal lovers here in the Philadelphia area."

That means a lot of happy endings for dogs who normally wouldn't have a chance.

"When you see a dog go into its forever home after you've gotten it better from being sick or from a really bad situation, makes it all worth it," said Crane.

The foster-based group relies on 350 volunteers, a group that grows with every adoption.

"When people bring these dogs home with them they realize they want to be part of the bigger picture," said Crane.

Lissy Griffin adopted her dog Sadie from Home At Last on Valentine's Day in 2015.

"I saw Sadie, and I said, 'If I go over there to see that dog I'm going to take her home,'" said Griffin.

Sure enough, Griffin and her husband, Mike, brought Sadie home to meet their other rescue, Mutley.

"Mutley does not love every dog," said Griffin. "All of a sudden we saw them cuddling one day on the couch, and it was love from there."

Griffin's successful experience with Home At Last left her wanting to do more.

"I knew that I wanted to be involved," she explained. "I love dogs. I've loved dogs my whole life."

Now she's helping to find homes for dogs like Cypress.

"She's about a 2-year old Boxer mix," said Griffin. "We call her the couch potato."

Elbee is all ears.

"His ears are a little crazy, so we think he's a little bit like a Shepherd mix," said Crane.

But those ears make this 6-month-old mutt a good listener.

Freddie is a 2-year-old Basset Hound mix.

"He's a friendly boy, as you can see," said Crane. "He loves other dogs, kids... and he's good with cats."

And someone surrendered an 8-week-old puppy named Lori.

"We think she's a Wire Hair Terrier," said Crane. "She'll be on the smaller side."

And Bree was found abandoned in Cobbs Creek right around Christmas. She just had a litter of puppies and was left out in the cold.

A 1-year-old Boxer mix, she loves to play and gets along with other dogs at her foster home. This mommy just needs a home.
