Philadelphia City Councilman Jim Kenney resigned his post today and officially entered the race for Mayor.

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Philadelphia City Councilman Jim Kenney resigned his post today and officially entered the race for Mayor.

Kenney gave his farewell address at City Council today.

Under the city's charter, council members have to resign from their seats in order to run for Mayor.

Kenney had served in council since 1992.

Prior to serving, he was a former aide to State Senator Vince Fumo.

Kenney joins a crowded Democratic field heading into the May 19th primary.
