School administrators and staff in Delaware County gathered to learn about security for students and families during Pope Francis? visit in September.

ASTON, Pa. (WPVI) -- With an array of tactical gear outside and uniformed officers inside, this was no ordinary school safety summit in Aston, Delaware County.

School administrators and staff were here to learn about security for their students and their families during Pope Francis' visit in September.

They had an array of concerns.

"The large crowds and what to anticipate as far as transportation and if something should happen," said Helen McLean, St. Andrew's School principal.

It's estimated upwards of 2 million people will pack the Parkway to celebrate mass with Pope Francis.

It's in Philadelphia, but the ripple effect is being felt by the surrounding counties.

"We are on alert here in Delaware County; we're ready to assist Philadelphia. There is a five county regional effort going on right now," said Jack Whelan, Delaware County District Attorney.

The surrounding counties have committed resources and personnel to the visit.

School administrators here Thursday were briefed on how to keep children safe in large crowds.

And they were briefed on how authorities are preparing for a possible terror attack.

"I'm still a little cautious but as they said earlier, if you give into fear, then the terrorists win," said McClean.

And it's not just the terror threat - there's extreme weather and medical emergencies to worry about as well.

Most of the people headed to the Parkway will use public transit, but Delaware County authorities are expecting massive traffic jams.

They are working on logistics to make sure emergency crews can get around quickly.

"We realize this is probably going to be the biggest event we are going to be facing, from a five county regional aspect, in our lifetime," said Whelan.

The hope is that none of this will be necessary but, the clock is ticking and they've got to make sure all the bases are covered by September.
