SPRINGFIELD TWP., Pa. (WPVI) -- Police in Springfield, Delaware County, are investigating a crash that left two teens injured, one critically.
The two 14-year-olds were thrown from their electric scooter after colliding with a pickup truck.
Officers and paramedics were called to the 400 block of North Bishop Avenue just before 9 p.m. Tuesday.
Police said two 14-year-olds had been riding an electric scooter from Upper Darby into Springfield.
"At some point around the area where Sycamore Avenue intersects with Bishop Avenue, the boys collided with a pickup truck who was heading southbound," noted Lieutenant David DiTrolio of the Springfield Police Department.
Police said the driver of the pickup truck immediately stopped to call 911 as the boys were thrown from the electric scooter.
Officials noted it's a busy road, often with speeding cars, and there were no signs of the boys wearing helmets.
"Scooter versus motor vehicle is a recipe for disaster, sadly, as we have seen that throughout the summer in Delaware County," explained DiTrolio.
In June, two girls were riding an electric scooter together in Aston when they fell and were hit by a car.
One died while the other was seriously injured.
According to authorities, legally, scooters are only allowed on private property, adding they're concerned with how popular these toys are becoming and not being operated safely.
"I think it's important for parents to realize that these scooters on highways, they have no business being operated on a highway. They are not conducive to safety," DiTrolio added.
The investigation is ongoing.
Both boys were taken to local hospitals.
One suffered injuries, including a broken arm. The other remains in critical condition.
