Atlantic City police shooting: Man fired shots at police before being killed, NJ AG says

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (WPVI) -- New information was released Friday about the deadly officer-involved shooting in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

The New Jersey Attorney General's Office says 52-year-old Donald Gardner, who is also known as Donald Capriotti, fired shots at police before being shot and killed in the encounter with officers.

Two police officers were also shot and injured in the incident.

The shooting happened as police attempted to execute a search warrant on Tuesday in the 100 block of North Florida Avenue.

When SWAT officers arrived at the residence, the front door was initially open and was then closed by someone inside the home, according to officials.

Officials say the officers announced themselves before using a mechanical device to breach the door.

The AG's office says Gardner was inside the residence, and as the door opened, he allegedly fired multiple shots at the officers.

One of the officers, identified as SWAT Sergeant Christian Ivanov, was struck in the helmet. He remains hospitalized in serious but stable condition.

The second officer was shot in the leg. He has since been released from the hospital.

A third officer at the scene, who was not hit by gunfire, fired back and shot Gardner, according to officials.

The firing officer was identified as Atlantic City Police Officer Robert Reynolds.

Gardner was pronounced dead at the scene and a handgun was recovered, according to investigators.

A GoFundMe has been set up to help Ivanov and his family as the officer recovers.

The investigation is ongoing.
