PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- The widows of two fallen law enforcement officers embraced Thursday as they accepted awards posthumously bestowed upon their husbands by the Citizens Crime Commission of Philadelphia.

Lauren Snook attended the ceremony with her young daughter, Letty, representing her late husband, Delaware State Corporal Matthew Ty Snook.

Snook was killed in the line of duty at a DMV near Wilmington two days before Christmas.

"It's strange that you feel the prayers and the power of people behind you and you don't even know their names or faces," Snook said.

"Our world has completely exploded since then. But so much love. I never realized you could love an angel, and that you could love a community that just comes in and supports you," she said.

The Citizens Crime Commission works to connect the public with law enforcement and strengthen communication between them.

On Thursday, supporters gathered to honor local law enforcement for bravery, heroism, and valor.

"They have a high level of honor and standards. Really what drives them is their ability to make a difference in the safety of the citizens of the Delaware Valley," said Chairman Larry Sechuk.

The ceremony included a posthumous Presidential Award for fallen Philadelphia Highway Patrolman Andy Chan.

Chan, a father of three, died in December, six years after he was struck by a vehicle while riding his issued motorcycle.

"Hopefully, his spirit is here and enjoying all of this. He would really appreciate it," said his widow, Teng Chan. "We feel so fortunate that everyone still wants to keep his memory alive and to honor him for his life's work."

The Citizens Crime Commission of Philadelphia has operated the Crimestoppers tip line around the clock since 1986, assisting in solving crimes across the region.

This year marked Action News Anchor Rick Williams' 17th time emceeing the event.
