PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A 67-year-old woman died after she was stabbed multiple times outside her West Philadelphia home late Sunday, and police say her daughter is in custody in connection with the killing.
Officers responded to the 4600 block of Westminster Avenue just before 11 p.m., where they found the woman lying on the sidewalk suffering from multiple stab wounds. Authorities said the woman was rushed to a hospital but did not survive.
Police said the suspect, identified as the victim's daughter, is in custody as investigators work to determine what led up to the stabbing.
"It appears that the woman died at the hands of her daughter, who stabbed her multiple times," police said.
A neighbor said the violence unfolded on her porch after the victim sought help. The neighbor said she initially heard banging at her door and went outside after she heard her say her name.
"I went over to her. I said Charmaine, what happened? Are you alright? ' What happened? ' She kept saying, ' My daughter, my daughter'," the neighbor said.
The neighbor described the gruesome aftermath.
"Oh, it looked like a blood bath smeared blood all over the ground, my ringer, the banister, and in front of the door. Blood everywhere," she said.
The neighbor said she tried to assist the victim, called 911, and even flagged down an ambulance nearby.
"I checked her again, and her breathing had changed. She kept trying to catch her breath," she said.
Officials said the stabbing occurred outside after the victim left her apartment to seek help. Residents in the area said the victim lived with her daughter and grandchildren.
"She didn't deserve that. She did everything for that girl, everything. She was at her daughter's beck and call, and that's the one that takes her life," the neighbor said.
Investigators continue to piece together the circumstances leading up to the stabbing.
