DARBY TWP., Pa. (WPVI) -- A hoarding case in Darby Township has turned tragic, with more than 70 cats found living in unsafe and unsanitary conditions - some of which did not survive.
The owner now faces animal cruelty charges.
The Brandywine Valley SPCA said it was alerted by police to a condemned home on the 1000 block of Pine Road, where dozens of cats belonging to Casey Bonnell were discovered.
Officers spent three weeks rescuing the animals, prioritizing those in urgent need of care.
Shelter officials said they initially attempted to work with Bonnell, but it became clear he was not providing care for the cats.
Many of the rescued animals are still recovering from what the shelter described as "deplorable" conditions. They still require spaying, neutering, and vaccinations.
The SPCA is reminding pet owners that safety net programs and grant funding are available to help prevent situations like this.
Bonnell is scheduled to appear in court next month.
