PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Philadelphia police say a father shot and killed a man he thought had raped his daughter. However, detectives tell Action News the victim was not involved in the alleged sexual assault.

The violence happened Sunday morning in the parking lot of the Hampton Inn in South Philadelphia.

Officers responded to the Hampton Inn along the 8600 block of Bartram Avenue in Eastwick for a report of a rape around 4:40 a.m.

Investigators say the woman told her father she was allegedly raped at the hotel.

According to police, the father then showed up and shot the victim.

When officers arrived, they found a man shot once in the chest.

He was taken to Penn Presbyterian Hospital, where he later died.

A hotel guest said she heard a loud noise down the hall before the shooting.

"It was just like a commotion," the witness described. "I didn't know what was going on. I kept hearing like a child screaming at the top of their lungs and then a lady was like 'My baby, my baby.'"

The father was taken into custody at the scene and a gun was recovered. Police also recovered seven shell casings.

The rape is being investigated by the Special Victims Unit.
