High hopes for Drexel lacrosse in NCAA tournament
UNIVERSITY CITY (WPVI) -- The Drexel Dragons has come a long way from their first ever lacrosse season in 1947 when they didn't win a single game.
These Dragons are in the NCAA tournament for the first time in school history.
Their coming off their first NCAA tournament win too, after knocking off UPenn - even the team can't believe it.
"To finally be here, experience and win our first NCAA game, it's surreal and it's fantastic too," said Ben McIntosh, player.
When you think of Drexel, you don't necessarily think 'powerhouse lacrosse' program but that could soon change.
The team is not just happy to be here and they're not satisfied with one win, they want to hang a championship banner just like the soccer team.
"We have a chance to compete for a national championship right now and that's our goal - go to the Final Four and compete for the national championship," said Nick Saputo, player.
"You're never satisfied, you always want more. We want to be greedy, we want to keep winning," said McIntosh.
Drexel is one win away from the Final Four but it will be the toughest win in team history.
They face Denver, the second ranked team in the country, on Sunday. Denver played in the Final Four last year.
"I don't think anybody is expecting us to win this game but everyone here on our team believes we can do it, it will take a special effort," said Brian Voelker, coach.
However this just might be the special group that can pull it off.
The team will have plenty of support considering that Sunday's game is right down the road in Delaware.
