Imhotep students study Japan's recycling innovations with hopes of shaping local policy

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A group of Imhotep Institute Charter High School students traveled halfway around the world to see how Japan is building a greener future - and now they hope to bring those lessons home to Philadelphia.

The students visited facilities showcasing Japan's cutting-edge recycling systems, where trash is converted into clean energy and contaminated water is transformed into drinkable water.

The trip offered a firsthand look at how advanced technology and strict waste management practices can dramatically reduce environmental impact.

School leaders say the experience was designed to show students what is possible when a country invests in sustainability at every level.

After witnessing those systems in action, the students are now exploring ways to turn what they learned into local legislation aimed at improving recycling and environmental practices in their own communities.

The group plans to share its findings with city leaders as they work to translate global innovation into local change.
