Musician gives hospital patients hope with the sound of the harp
LANGHORNE, Pennsylvania (WPVI) -- She first picked up the harp in high school and returned to its soothing sound when she needed it most.
Now, Edie Elkan brings her perfectly-plucked performances to the bedside of patients in local hospitals.
Elkan, founder of 'Bedside Harp,' has spent the last 25 years bringing soothing sounds to hospital patients in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
It was 2001 and she had just returned home from getting certified in playing harp at the bedside. Then, her husband was hospitalized.
On life support, her husband remembers hearing the sound of Elkan's harp. He said it gave him hope.
After he made a recovery, Elkan started bringing her harp skills to other area hospitals.
Today, she and her Bedside Harp musicians are in 7 hospitals across Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
They visit patients at Jefferson Bucks Hospital among others.
