Trenton mayor says state police probe focuses on missing permit funds

TRENTON, N.J. (WPVI) -- New Jersey State Police spent several hours at Trenton City Hall on Tuesday investigating allegations of misconduct involving the city's Division of Inspections and Department of Housing and Economic Development, according to Mayor Reed Gusciora.
Gusciora said investigators removed boxes of evidence from City Hall during a search that lasted several hours. The investigation involves a former city employee and allegations of missing funds.
"We want to make it clear that we have zero tolerance for any kind of corruption, and that's why we made the referral," said Gusciora.
The mayor said the employee was separated from the city in 2024 after concerns emerged about missing funds paid for permits. He said the matter was then referred to the New Jersey Attorney General's Office for investigation.
"It was a clerical function. The allegation is that the money wasn't deposited in the city's account," Gusciora said.
The amount of missing funds remains unclear.
In response to the allegations, Gusciora said the city has added cameras in reception areas to provide additional oversight. He said the city is fully cooperating with the attorney general's office.

"We want to make sure we've taken the proper action, and that's why we've contacted the attorney general's office and the prosecutor's office," Gusciora said.
Questions remain about the timing of the investigation. Asked why two years elapsed before authorities searched the office, a spokesperson for the AG's office declined to comment.
The former employee has not been publicly identified in connection with the investigation.
As of Tuesday, no charges were known to have been filed.
