Coastal storm impacts at Jersey Shore

OCEAN CITY, N.J. (WPVI) -- Officials at the Jersey Shore continued to ask drivers to stay off the roads into Monday evening as the coastal storm continued to cause flooding issues.

As the rain came down in Atlantic City on Monday afternoon, kids rode their bikes through flooded intersections with the water almost covering their tires.

The coastal storm lingered into a second day at the Jersey shore, and that meant tricky travel up and down the coast.

In Margate, some brave drivers with larger trucks drove through water around high tide.

The waves crashed in Ocean City as a few onlookers took it all in.

"Everybody was calling us asking, 'Oh my God, what is it like down there?' It's just a little rain. The waves are big. The wind was bad," said Donna Hughes from Wissinoming.

Viewer video shows street flooding in the Merion Park section of Ocean City - adjacent to the bay - during high tide on Sunday.

"It was up to our second step , going up to our front porch. So pretty deep," said Joe Dovis. "Unless you had waders on, you couldn't really walk and there were kids in the street in canoes and things like that. So it was pretty deep."

Folks who live here say they're used to flooding. Terry Crowley had water in his garage, which he had already emptied.

"I mean, we had water in there, but this - compared to Sandy -was a piece of cake," said Terry Crowley, who has lived in Ocean City for 17 years.

Ocean City Mayor Jay Gillian is urging people not to drive through water, not only to save their cars but also so it doesn't damage other people's property.

"Our biggest problem are cars," said Gillian. "They're like motorboats and they're throwing wake, so they're getting some of the houses, obviously damaging some homes, and blowing garage doors out in a couple places."

Monday afternoon's high tide was expected to be the worst of this storm.

In Atlantic City, an emergency shelter has been open since Saturday in the convention center for anyone who needs a place to stay. That'll be open at least until Tuesday morning.
