Ocean City marks unofficial start to summer with annual unlocking of the ocean

OCEAN CITY, N.J. (WPVI) -- Ocean City, New Jersey, marked the unofficial start of its 2026 summer season on Friday with the unlocking of the ocean and the annual Business Persons Plunge, where participants in costumes ranging from mermaids to dinosaurs marched into frigid ocean waters despite cloudy, windy conditions.

The event signaled the shore town's readiness for the busy summer months ahead, even as the weather proved less than ideal.

"It's not as cold as I thought it was going to be. It's a little chilly, but I'm good," said Ocean City Council member Jim Kelly after taking the plunge.

Mayor Jay Gillian embraced the less-than-perfect forecast, calling it a promising sign for the season.

"This is good luck. As my grandfather always said, a horrible Memorial Day means a great season," Gillian said.

Although skies were gray with occasional rain and strong winds, crowds still traveled to the beach town to take part in festivities and walk the boardwalk.

"Even though it's a little cloudy, it's a great boardwalk day, so it's a great day for Ocean City," Gillian added.

Visitors said the trip offered a welcome break, regardless of the weather.

"I have three young kids, so anything we can do to get up and out and go somewhere else is always the goal," said Jen Snopko of West Chester, Pennsylvania.

Along the boardwalk, business owners - from clothing shops to restaurants - were encouraged to see customers continue to show up ahead of the summer rush.

"We're a little concerned about the weather, but we're optimistic for a good season," said Drew Diamond of Litterers Bistro and Pizza.

Beachgoers bundled up in sweatshirts and jackets, but many said the conditions wouldn't keep them away from their seasonal routines.

"We've been down here for 35 years. It's all good just to get out of Philly," said Jim Sullivan of Somerton.

Despite the chilly start, the annual plunge and steady turnout underscored optimism that Ocean City is ready for a strong summer season.
