PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro was in Philadelphia's East Falls section Thursday to unveil a proposal to create more affordable housing.
Shapiro's "Housing Action Plan" sets a goal of building more new homes and preserving existing homes over the next ten years.
It also aims to cut the red tape that prevents people from becoming homeowners and includes protections for renters.
The proposal would also modernize regulations to speed up development and increase coordination between state and local governments.
In his new budget, the governor included a one billion dollars in the critical infrastructure fund to build housing across the Commonwealth.
Shapiro's budget and the housing plan must now be approved by the General Assembly.
