PENNSAUKEN, N.J. (WPVI) -- Veterans, first responders and members of the Pennsauken community gathered at Liberty Park for an annual ceremony honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

The event brought people together to remember fallen service members and recognize their service. Attendees reflected on the significance of the memorial, which has stood in the park for decades.

"As long as we say their names, they will not be forgotten. This monument behind us was erected in 1988. I was here on Memorial Day 1988," said veteran Bernie Kofoet.

The ceremony, held each year at Liberty Park, centers around a memorial dedicated to Pennsauken residents who died in the line of duty.

"This is Liberty Park. We have a beautiful memorial back here that represents all our Pennsauken residents fallen in the line of duty," said Mayor Patrick Olivo.

American flags lined the park as participants paid their respects. Many grew emotional while placing wreaths at the memorial, one by one, in tribute to the fallen.

"It's always good to see a community come together to support our veterans so they are not forgotten," Kofoet said.

Organizers emphasized the day is not only about remembrance, but also about acknowledging the families of those who never returned home.

Visunthara Han, a Pennsauken High School color guard commander and third-year Air Force Junior ROTC second lieutenant, participated in the ceremony.

"We're here to commemorate the people that have fought and served for our nation and country. It's an honor and privilege to be here and present colors for this prestigious event," Han said.

Community members noted the memorial at Liberty Park remains open year-round for reflection, encouraging visitors to honor those listed on its walls beyond Memorial Day.
