Phillies fans brave extreme heat as team offers cooling measures

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Triple-digit temperatures didn't keep Phillies fans away from the ballpark Thursday as thousands packed Citizens Bank Park for an afternoon game, where the team introduced several measures to help spectators stay safe in the extreme temperatures.

For Thursday's game only, the Phillies relaxed some of the stadium's bag policies, allowing fans to bring soft-sided coolers and ice packs into the ballpark. The team also distributed free bottled water at the gates and set up inflatable misting stations to help fans cool off before entering.

Many fans arrived prepared with cooling towels, neck fans, sunscreen and plenty of water.

"We came down with the whole top down the way. We're not gonna miss a ray. We're not gonna miss a play," said Jill Davidock of King of Prussia.

Others said the weather wasn't enough to keep them from cheering on the home team.

"You know what? It's a Phillies game. I don't care what the weather is," said Paisha Pike of Coatesville.

Fans praised the team's efforts to combat the dangerous heat.

"They're very proactive. We were surprised about the water, so that was nice," said Alyssa Cowling of Blackwood, New Jersey.

Karen Stone of Doylestown admitted she may have reconsidered attending had she known just how hot it would be.

"Had I known the forecast when we bought the tickets, I probably would not be here, but we're gonna just sweat and have a great time," Stone said.

Tailgaters also found ways to beat the heat before first pitch.

"We were tailgating underneath the shade under the solar panels," said Brian Miller of Macungie. "We got everything, neck fans, hats, water, Gatorade. We're loving it."

The Phillies game ended with a disappointing 6-1 loss to the Pirates.

The next big event at the sports complex is set for Saturday, July 4, when the final FIFA World Cup match at Philadelphia Stadium will be held.

FIFA is only allowing 20-ounce disposable water bottles. Reusable water bottles will not be allowed.
