SALEM CO., N.J. (WPVI) -- A police officer in New Jersey is being charged in connection with the deaths of two K-9s.

Salem County Sheriff's Department Sergeant Cody Henderson is facing a number of charges, including animal cruelty.

Henderson is being accused of leaving K-9 Boomer and K-9 Rip unattended in a vehicle between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. on May 29.

The prosecutor's office said the car was not left running, the windows remained closed, no emergency alert system was activated, and the "immediately available" indoor kennels were not used.

Investigators say Henderson was the one who found the K-9s, and he drove them to an animal hospital in Delaware, but by then it was too late.
